How to Grow Tomato Seeds

Posted on April 17, 2018April 8, 2019 by Leticia Bradley

Do you want to grow your own tomato plants? To grow tomato seeds you’ll have to ensure that the correct steps are followed. Outlined below are some simple directions on how to grow your tomato seeds.

In order to complete these tasks you will need:

  • tomato seeds (your favorite variety);
  • sterile potting soil;
  • seed tray;
  • individual pots (new or clean);
  • water.

Your first step is to prepare the soil. Do this by filling your seed tray with sterile potting soil and fill the tray almost to the top. Next, water the soil well so that it is moist. You will then ensure that your hands are clean and you’ll place the tomato seeds (of your choice) into the mosit soil. Cover the seeds with finely crumbled compost or with a thin layer of vermiculite.

In the next step you want to place your planted tomato seeds in an area that will receive a lot of sunlight. A sunny windowsill will work well. Ensure that you continue to water your plants daily.

In about 6 – 11 days you should begin to see your tomato seeds sprouting. Of course this will all depend on the variety of tomato as some take a bit longer. Allow your seeds to grow until it begins to plant and reaches a height of about two inches.

As soon as your plants are two inches, you can now transport them into a small pot or container. To do this, fill your pot iwth sterile soil and then water the pot. Wait about ten minutes and allow the pot to drain. Repeat the process and water the pot again. Wait another ten minutes and let the pot drain. Then take your seedlings and carefully transport them to a new pot (one seedling plant per pot). Be careful to not damage the roots.

Over the course of the next several weeks, water your tomato plants well. Soon you will see your plants start to grow some leaves (this is a good sign). Once your plants reach a height of about 6-8 inches you can safely transport them outdoors into your garden. Just repeat the process and ensure to water them well over the next several weeks. In no time you will be enjoying beautiful fresh garden tomatoes.
